Berlin first had its start around the 1790's. At the time it was a part of the Burley Plantation, 300 acre land grant that dates back to 1677.  Before the 1800's Berlin was called Stevenson's Crossroads. At that time the Stevenson family were local landowners. The name Berlin is believed to come from a local tavern at the time, called the Burleigh Inn. The tavern was located at the crossroads of the Philadelphia Post Road (now which is South Main Street) and the Sinepuxent Road (Now Tripoli Street). In 1868 Berlin was incorporated as a town. Since Burley had an inn, it was a popular crossroads between Salisbury and Trappe, also Philadelphia and Cape Charles. The downtown area had three devastating fires in 1895, 1902 and 1904. This area is now a National Register Historic District. Some of the most successful industries here were Harrison Nurseries, the Berlin Milling Company and Phillips Cannery. By the early twentieth century, the town of Berlin was known as a rest stop for travelers on their way to the coastal resort of Ocean City.

Berlin is so charming that two feature length movies were filmed here - Tuck Everlasting and Runaway Bride. The historic town of Berlin is just minutes from Ocean City, Maryland and the Assateague Island National Seashore. The town enjoys a superb crossroads location in the heart of Worcester County.
